FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions (click to expand)

What if two students have the same email address?

Multiple students can have the same email address. Unlike teachers, students use a username they create when they sign up to sign in. Each student account must have a unique username.

Practopus only uses student email addresses if the teacher sends the student an invite email, or if the students forgets and needs to reset their password.

Why didn't my students receive my invite emails to create their account?

There are a few reasons the invite emails you sent to your students may fail to be delivered.

1. Some school system email accounts block external emails from reaching students. If you are using your students' school email and the invite is not delivered: double check the accuracy of the address, then ciontact us at support@practopus.com and we can confirm whether or not the system is rejecting the emails. If it is, you can either contact your IT department to request they allow Practopus emails to be delivered, use an alternate email address for your students, or have them create their own accounts at www.practopus.com.

2. Check for typos and verify the accuracy of the email addresses.

*If everything seems correct and the emails are still noe being delivered, contact us at support@practopus.com and we can diagnose and take care of what is causing the failed delivery.

What if my students leave the timer running by accident?

You can edit a student's minutes for any day from your teacher account.

1. Go to the students profile page in your account.

2. Click on Edit Minutes above the graph to the right.

3. Select the year and month you would like to edit. Then you will see the days and editable minutes appear below.

*When you edit minutes the clams will automatically change to reflect the edits you make.

*You must wait until the next day to edit any day's minutes.

Do I have to supply the Rewards for my students?

With the free version of Practopus, yes. Teachers load their own Rewards onto the app that appear for purchase in their students' Store. We have a great guide to give you some ideas for creative and cost-effective rewards here: Rewards Guide

Practopus Premium comes with in-app Rewards, like Avatars, that your students can use their clams to purchase and personalize their app. We are constantly adding new and exciting avatars to keep them fresh and fun!

Can my students use an external metronome or tuner while practicing?

Right now, the practice timer will pause when students leave the app for any reason.

The app is designed this way to prevent students from starting the timer and exiting the app to do other activities, like texting and mobile gaming, instead of practicing.

HOWEVER, there is a metronome built into Practopus that students can use anywhere in the app. They can access the metronome by clicking the menu icon in the upper left of their account.

If other apps and tools are needed, students can access their Practopus account on their phone, tablet, or computer on either the app or an internet browser (at www.practopus.com), so, if possible, they can run the external apps and tools on one device and the practice timer on another. Another option is that some apps will run "in the background" so a student can start them before they open Practopus and it will continue to run while they are running the practice timer in Practopus.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions (click to expand)

Why won't my device record?

You MUST grant the Practopus app or internet browser you are using access to your device's microphone. A window asking for microphone permission will automatically appear the first time you record.

*Important Note: If you are using an iPhone or iPad, you CANNOT record with Chrome or Firefox internet browsers. Apple does not allow these browsers to access the microphone. You can however use Safari or the Practopus app.

To grant microphone access to Practopus if you accidentally reject it initially:
Chrome internet browser: Click the lock symbol to the left of the URL and then select Allow in the Microphone dropdown menu. Go back to the Dashboard and refresh the page.
Safari internet browser: click the Safari menu item in the upper-left, then "Settings for This Website..." A window will appear below the URL. Select Allow in the dropdown menu next to Microphone. Go back to the Dashboard and refresh the page.
Firefox internet browser: Click the lock symbol to the left of the URL and then click the X next to "Use the Microphone Blocked Temporarily." Go back to the Dashboard and refresh the page.
Practopus App on Apple device: Go to Settings -> Privacy -> Microphone. Practopus should be listed and you can toggle the switch to grant access.
Practopus App on Android device: Go to Settings -> Apps -> Practopus -> Permissions. Microphone should be listed and you can toggle the switch to grant access.

Can both of my children use a single Practopus account?

For now, each student needs to have their own Practopus account.

However, you can use the same email address for multiple students. Each account requires a unique username.

Can I use an external metronome or tuner while practicing?

Right now, the practice timer will pause when you leave the app for any reason.

HOWEVER, there is a metronome built into Practopus that you can use anywhere in the app. You can access the metronome by clicking the menu icon in the upper left.

If other apps and tools are needed, you can access your Practopus account on phone, tablet, or computer on either the app or an internet browser (at www.practopus.com), so, if possible, you can run the external apps and tools on one device and the practice timer on another. Another option is that some apps will run "in the background" so you can start them before you open Practopus and it will continue to run while you are running the practice timer in Practopus.

Why am I not getting my password reset emails?

There are a few reasons your password reset emails may not get delivered.

1. The email address in your account is incorrect. This is usually the result of a typo when you signed up.

2. Your username is incorrect. If you are not sure or can't remember what your username is, email us.

3. Your school system is blocking the password reset email. Many school systems block emails, especially to students, from outside sources.

If you have requested the password reset email and it is not being delivered to you, email support@practopus.com and the support team will assist you with setting a new password.

Signing Up

Instructions to sign up

Download Practopus

Download Practopus from the App Store, Google Play, or go to www.practopus.com and click Sign Up to create your student account. Be sure to select "I am a student" above the sign-up form and fill in your teacher's email address in the form, which will automatically connect your account to theirs.

Timing Practice

How do I time a practice session?

Time a session:

Time your practice sessions using the timer in the Dashboard tab.

Touch the center of the timer when you begin your practice session to start the timer.

The number in the middle is the number of minutes you've been practicing, which are also shown as a growing ring around the timer.

Touch the center of the timer again when you are done practicing to stop the timer.

Remember the minutes do not count until they are verified, which, must be done after a session and before the end of that day. - see the next question.

*NOTE: After 20 minutes on the timer (aka on the same day) each minute starts counting for 2 clams, After 40 minutes each minute = 3 clams, and after 60 minutes each minute = 4 clams!

How do I verify a practice session?

Verify a session:

If your teacher requires it, parents must verify practice after the session and before the end of that day.

Any practice minutes that are left unverified will be erased overnight and not counted.

Parents verify practice by touching the Pending button with yellow text below the timer, which will appear after the first minute of practice.

Then they enter their PIN in the pop up window and touch the green checkmark button to verify.

This will add the pending minutes and clams to the students account.

The default PIN is 0000, which can be changed in the Account settings. PINs must be numbers only.

What if I forgot to stop the timer or ran it accidentally and don't want to verify the minutes?

Erase a session:

You can reset the timer to the last verified point by following the instructions to verify a session (previous question) except touch the red button with the X instead of the green button after you enter the PIN.

For instance, if your child practiced for 15 minutes on Saturday morning and you verified those minutes, then they left the timer running in the afternoon by mistake. The timer would reset to 15 minutes when you erased the accidental session.

Tasks

How do I complete a task?

Tasks your teacher has assigned to you will be listed in the task feed on your Dashboard.

Access a task by touching the task in the Dashboard.

There are 4 types of Tasks: Performance, Writing, Video and Quiz.

Performance Tasks

Performance Tasks are a pink color and require you to practice something and then perform it for your teacher.

No Recording: If your teacher is not asking you to submit a recording, touch the Done button in the task when you are ready to perform in person.

Recording: If your teacher is asking you to submit a recording, touch the record button in the task to start the recording. Press stop when you are finished with the performance. You then have the option to Submit the recording or record again. If you record again, the new recording will replace the previous one. You can listen to a recording before you submit by pressing the play button on the audio player that appears above the buttons.

*Important Note: You must grant Practopus microphone access the first time you are recording. Please see the FAQ section above under the question, "Why won't my device record?" for troubleshooting and more information.

After you submit (with a recording or not), you'll see a yellow pending icon next to the task in your feed, which will remain there until your teacher either verifies your performance or returns the task.

When your teacher verifies the task you'll receive the clams and it will be moved to your History tab.

If your teacher returns the task, the pending icon will change to a red incomplete icon and allow you to resubmit the task after you have practiced more.

The Store

How do I purchase a Reward?

Your teacher can offer Rewards in the Store tab for practicing and completeing Tasks.

Each Reward will occupy a square in the Store and you can see what you can afford with your clams by the color of the price. Green means you can purchase and Red means you need to earn more clams.

Once you touch the Reward you will see more information and can then purchase it by touching the Get button.

Once your purchase the Reward, it will appear in your Purchases list, which you can access through your Account tab or by touching the bag icon in the upper left of your Store.

I've purchased a Reward. Now what?

Rewards you have purchased are listed in your Purchases list, which you can access from your Account tab or the bag icon in the upper left of the Store.

Items in the Purchases list will be gray before you receive them and post the date you purchased them. Your teacher will receive a notice that you made the purchase.

When your teacher gives you or fulfills the Reward, they will mark it as Delivered in their account and the color will change from gray to green in your Purchases list, as well as update the date to when it was delivered.

This is very handy if you ever can't remember if you received a Reward you purchased.

Avatars: Some students will see avatars available in their Store. When you purchase an avatar it will be "delivered" automatically and added to your purchases list. You can then select any avatar you have purchased to set it as your profile picture and have it appear on your dashboard.
